Pick 1

The Dilbert Principle : A Cubicle's-Eye View of Bosses, Meetings, Management Fads &
Other Workplace Afflictions
by Scott Adams
Hardcover, 336 pages; Published by Harperbusiness; Publication date: June 1,1996
List: $22.00 ~ Amazon Price: $15.40 ~ You Save: $6.60 (30%)
Availability: This item can be shipped on the next weekday.

Review (5/97): We all need a little humor in our life to be better business people. But this book offers more than just humor. First, read the business advice and benefit from the mistakes pointed out by Scott Adams. He shows, through Dilbert and the wondrous management consultant Dogbert, how to be the hapless victim of re-engineering, rightsizing and Total Quality Management some strategies for fighting back, er, coping. Forced to work long hours, with no hope of a raise? Adams offers tips on maintaining parity in compensation. Along the way, Adams explains what ISO 9000 really is and assesses the irresistibility of engineers.

The breath-taking cynicism of the strip should prepare readers for the author's no-holds-barred attack on management fads, large organizations, pointless bureaucracy and sadistic rule-makers who glory in control of office supplies. Readers of the on-line Dilbert Newsletter are familiar with the kind of e-mail Adams receives from his readers -- and may even have sent a few of those missives themselves. Along with illustrative strips, e-mail messages provide excruciating examples of corporate behavior which compel the reader to agree with Adams when he insists that "People are idiots".

The final chapter offers a model for would-be successful businesses to follow: the OA5 model. It's introduced with little fanfare, no outrageous promises and just a right amount of self-deprecation. While it not as optimum as we would approach it, it is not a bad discussion of how to approach management better. (Amazon.com)

Pick 2

Dogbert's Top Secret Management Handbook
by Scott Adams
Hardcover, Published by Harperbusiness, Publication date: November 1,1996
ISBN: 0887307884
List: $16.00 ~ Amazon Price: $11.20 ~ You Save: $4.80 (30%)
Availability: This item can be shipped on the next weekday.

Review (2/96): Yeah we know, it's another Scott Adams humor book. But lets face it, looking at business opportunities, and the lack of them, through humor is highly helpful. Also, our products store has a ton of reference books that we recommend and stock and these are ones that we feel are both humorous and helpful; but we don';t stock them.

The handbook is taken directly from the word processor of world-class consultant Dogbert (a study in fee schedules in itself), and focuses on critical management responsibilities like keeping up with fads, implementing pointless reorganizations and demanding status reports. "Leadership isn't something you're born with," it declares. "It's something you learn by reading Dogbert books." (Business and Investment Expert Editor)

Review (6/97): Michael Cafferky is an international advocate of "word-of-mouth" marketing--an age old practice that utilizes community reputation and public good will to build business. Satisfied clients and loyal consumers can be any company's most effective salespeople, Cafferky says, and in Let Your Customers Do the Talking he outlines more than 300 relevant tactics that could be employed by small under-funded firms as well as large multinational corporations. Review (6/97): The sales floor is rarely associated with spiritual values, much less with integrity. Nonetheless, entrepreneur and sales trainer Sharon Drew Morgen believes it is entirely possible for sellers and buyers to experience both--while still meeting their individual mercantile needs. In Selling With Integrity: Reinventing Sales Through Collaboration, Respect, and Serving, she persuasively outlines a revolutionary "Buying Facilitation" approach that remakes a traditional adversarial relationship into one marked by genuine collaboration and honest consideration. Pick 6

Reengineering the Corporation, A Manifesto for Business Revolution
by Michael Hammer and James Champy
Reprint Edition , Paperback, Published by Harperbusiness, Publication date: May 1,1994
List: $14.00 ~ Amazon Price: $11.20 ~ You Save: $2.80 (20%)
Availability: This item usually shipped within 2-3 days.

Review (10/96): This is the reprint version of the classic hardcover edition first published in 1993. This was, and still remains, a New York Times bestseller. It describes the benefits of implementing a quantum leap in processes. The idea being to make at least a 20-percent improvement in performance by redesigning from scratch how the company does their work. It also points out very clearly that as much as 80-percent of all groups that try it, fail to meet the author's specification for success, "do more, with less." This is the starting place if you are thinking about trying reengineering.

Pick 7

The Reengineering Alternative, A Plan for Making Your Current Culture Work by William E. Schneider
Hardcover, 173 pages; Published by Irwin Professional Pub, Publication date: April 1,1994
List: $30.00 ~ Amazon Price: $21.00 ~ You Save: $9.00 (30%)
Availability: This item usually shipped within 2-3 days.

Review (10/96): Again, SAMI disagrees that reengineering is as appropriate as many managers and executives seem to think it is. We have data to back up this viewpoint. However, reengineering or reinvention is often appropriate. We often have recommended changes in processes that qualify as reinvention. When you think reengineering, this book is one of the better books on the subject. If you are thinking about trying reengineering, reinvention, or whatever you want to call it, this book and the classic reengineering book listed above should be considered required reading.

The following is the Amazon.com review. Mr. Schneider challenges organizations to look within for their competitive weapons: at their inherent strengths, objectives, and most important, the corporate culture. Specifically, he defines the four basic types of cultures and the corporate behaviors, the traditions, and the leadership and management approaches characteristic of them. These models serve as guidelines for understanding any organization - including those of your business partners and your competition. You'll also find a questionnaire for determining the nature of your organization: which corporate culture it mirrors and which change and management techniques will likely succeed within it. This thoroughly researched, pioneering book will prove invaluable before, during, and after any type of organizational change - corporate mergers / acquisitions, global expansion, quality initiatives, and more.. Pick 8

Book linkBeyond Reengineering, How the Process-Centered Organization Is Changing Our Work and Our Lives
by Michael Hammer
Hardcover, 285 pages; Published by Harperbusiness, Publication date: August 1,1996
List: $25.00 ~ Amazon Price: $17.50 ~ You Save: $7.50 (30%)
Availability: This item usually shipped within 2-3 days.

Review (11/96): The coauthor of Reengineering the Corporation offers some excellent thoughts into the consequences of making the reengineering decision. He clearly reiterates the message that today's process-centered organizations are overturning corporate hierarchies. It has changed the lives of workers at every level, everywhere, and has consequences that reverberate throughout society. He makes the point that the growth of the processes organization, marks the end of the Industrial Revolution. Excellent for both the executive and front-line worker. Note: Due to the impact of the original book and subsequent books, in 1997 Hammer was named by Time magazine as one of America's "twenty-five most influential individuals."
